Sustainability
& environment

At La-Z-Boy, we understand the impact our operations have on the environment, both locally and globally. That’s why we’re committed to integrating environmentally sound and sustainable business practices into everything we do (see our environmental policy). Our goal is to craft high-quality products, while having the least environmental impact. We are focused on reducing waste, increasing recycling and energy efficiency, and consuming fewer resources.

In addition, we work cooperatively with our suppliers to foster compliance with applicable laws and regulations concerning environmental protection through their conformity with our Supplier Code of Conduct and Product Stewardship program.

We strive to provide our stakeholders with important information about our sustainability-related governance and performance. In an effort to provide comparable information, we adopted a framework through which we can hold ourselves accountable for the environmental and social impact of our business operations using the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB) Sustainable Industry Classification System (SICS) Standard for the Consumer Products – Building Products & Furnishings industry to guide our disclosure. In addition, we are working toward aligning our future reporting with the climate-specific recommendations developed by the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD). We also recently committed to setting science-based targets to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by no later than 2050, assuming advancements in technology, public policy, and customer behavior. In the coming year, we will continue to dedicate resources to measuring, reporting on, and reducing our environmental footprint.

Commitment to Enhancing Furniture’s Environmental Culture (EFEC)

La-Z-Boy believes in our collective responsibility to manage and protect the world’s natural resources for future generations.

As part of that responsibility, we are EFEC registered (American Home Furnishing Alliance) and have implemented the EFEC comprehensive environmental management program at our manufacturing facilities. The EFEC program’s eleven elements establish measurable goals for reducing our environmental footprint.

EFEC trained employees

Employees at our registered plants have gone through EFEC training programs and characterized their facility-specific environmental footprint.

Developed eco-plans

In addition to adopting the EFEC program’s eleven elements, we have developed plans for energy, water and waste reduction at each facility.

Our EFEC registered facilities include the La-Z-Boy USA Branded Manufacturing plants, La-Z-Boy Casegoods (Kincaid, American Drew and Hammary) and our World Headquarters in Monroe, Michigan, which is also LEED-certified. Located in Saltillo, Mexico, our Cut and Sew Center was the first international facility in our industry to be EFEC registered.

Our corporate office monitors utilities data (electric, natural gas, water and wastewater) for our La-Z-Boy Branded Manufacturing operations (including our Cut and Sew Center in Mexico), La-Z-Boy Casegoods U.S. operations, La-Z-Boy Distribution Centers, La-Z-Boy corporate-owned Retail stores and our World Headquarters (“utility monitored operations”).

In addition, we monitor waste and recycling data for our La-Z-Boy Branded Manufacturing operations which generate the majority of our waste and recycling materials (“waste and recycling monitored operations”).

We evaluate methods to increase our corporate data collection systems for our other business units.

We have response plans in place to address various site-specific environmental, health and safety issues/events. We have not had a material environmental incident or major environmental controversy in Fiscal 2022 (May 2021 through April 2022).
